The muzzle rule

Measure your dog's muzzle from nose tip to the stop between the eyes. Buy a chew longer than that — every Pet Factory label repeats it, and it is the single best way to avoid a swallowed piece.

By breed size, as the labels put it

Small breeds: 3 in minis, 4 in bones, donuts, 5 in twists. Small to medium: 5 in chip rolls, 6 in bones and braids. Medium: 7–8 in rolls and braids, 6–7 in bones, CareChewz. Large: 9–12 in bones and rolls, 8–9 in mixes, the 20–22 in bone.

By chewing style

Gulpers: CareChewz collagen or munchy rolls, and stay close. Steady chewers: rolls and braids. Power chewers: knotted bones and thick braids.
